In this period when Chinese contemporary art was developing rapidly from the nineties to two thousand years later, Liu Xiaodong was hailed as a rising star who excelled at capturing everyday life scenes through his figurative style. "Companions" is one such example that has been treasured within Manfred Ludwig Schoeni family collection until now.
Completed in nineteen ninety-one, Liu Xiaodong's self-portrait titled "Companions" showcases his extraordinary talent in portraiture and realism. His precise technique and bold brushstrokes directly convey strong emotions without being too elaborate or over-the-top.
Liu Wei created a work titled "You Like Me? Series No.33," which was showcased alongside other renowned Chinese contemporary artists during an exhibition hosted by Sze Chiu Gallery for Manfred Ludwig Schoeni Gallery called "8+8-1: Fifteen Contemporary Oil Painters." This painting features bright colors and depicts a bizarre figure with exaggerated facial features that put emphasis on raw emotionality rather than realistic representation
This piece predates today’s trend towards embracing unique beauty deviating from societal standards while also reflecting rebellion against modernism prevalent during eighties decade; it epitomizes China’s contemporary art development process
