This picture, like all Herbins late works, was painted according to the system which he set out in his book LArt Non-Figuratif Non-Objectifpublished in 1949; it was based on correspondences between colours, forms, letters of the alphabet and musical notes. His practice was to take the letters of a word such as mer, non or midi as his starting-point for a completely abstract composition.
